History of the Falkuša – The Pride of Komiža Fishermen

For centuries, the fishermen of Komiža on the island of Vis sailed their Falkuša boats 42 miles to Palagruža, a fishing area rich with opportunities. Their journeys were demanding and strategic:

• ⚓ Loaded with salt, fishing gear, and daily supplies
• 🌬️ Sailed outward using the mistral (north-west wind)
• 🌙 Returned at night using the south wind

To meet these extreme requirements, fishermen relied on two complementary vessel types: cargo and fishing boats, combined uniquely in the Falkuša.

During voyages, the boat sailed with its Folke (protective board) mounted, mast raised, and the iconic lateen sails unfurled.
Upon reaching the fishing grounds, the crew removed the Folke, mast, boom, and sails, leaving them safely on shore so they would not interfere while handling heavy fishing nets.

The Falkuša was designed with practicality in mind—so agile that five crew members could easily haul the vessel ashore, even in places without safe harbors.

This traditional technique, combined with its cultural significance, makes the Falkuša one of the most admired Adriatic vessels in maritime history.
