Description
BARQUE ‘STEFANO’ 112,1cm, 44.13”, 1:63
By Maris Stella Model Ship Kits
A historically faithful, museum-level wooden model ship kit inspired by the 19th-century barque Stefano—a vessel known for her elegance, cargo-carrying efficiency, and tragic final voyage.
⛵ About the Barque (Barc / Bark)
A barque is a three-masted (or more) sailing vessel featuring:
- Square sails on the fore and main masts
- A spanker and peak sail on the stern mast

This rig became popular in the late 18th and mid-19th century for its efficiency, small crew requirements, and excellent upwind capability.
Barques were the workhorses of global cargo trade, faster than schooners and easier to handle than fully rigged ships—ideal for long-distance voyages with minimal crew.
Most four-masted windjammers—the giants of the world’s oceans—adopted this rig due to its exceptional balance of speed, control, and cost-effectiveness.
⚓ The Story of the Barque Stefano
Built in 1873 in Rijeka (Croatia), the Stefano belonged to the influential Bacic family, a dynasty of shipowners and grain merchants.
Named after Captain Stefano Bacic, who tragically died at age 24, the vessel became one of the family’s most important long-voyage ships.

The Final Voyage — 1875
In October 1875, during her third voyage, the Stefano was wrecked near Cape Cloates, Western Australia, en route from Cardiff to Hong Kong.
Of the more than 20 crew members, only two survived:
- Cadet Miho Bacic
- Sailor Ivan Juric
They lived among Australian Aboriginal communities for six months before returning home and recounting the dramatic story—today preserved in letters and historical documents.
This Maris Stella model kit faithfully revives this remarkable vessel.
